Kelly J. Townsend began her childbirth ministry in 1992 as a certified birth doula and childbirth educator. She went on to serve in the capacity of Doula Coordinator for Ashland Community Hospital in Ashland, OR, served as a Doulas of North America (DONA) trainer and State Representative for Oregon, and was the Oregon State trainer for Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA). Greetings of peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ. My name is Lori Silva. I live with my family in Los Angeles county, California. The LORD made this once barren woman to keep house and be a joyful mother of children. With my first birth, I wanted and was ready to go for a homebirth! But a mother in the LORD talked me out of it saying, "First have a baby in the hospital and then decide." Well, though my hospital experience was traumatic, her advice worked for my good. I was able to see first hand what can and does oftentimes take place in a hospital setting. Without firshand experience, I don't think I would believe some of the stories that women share of their own birthing experiences in hospitals. I thank the LORD for the wonderful journey and growing experience the birth process has been for us. It has profoundly effected our marriage, our parenting, our views, our lives. (doula) mostly for people in my classes who ask. I teach in secular
settings, but always find ways to bring the idea of prayer and other
Christian comfort techniques into the class. I am open to teaching a
more Christian class for new parents or a refresher for experienced
parents on the side. I like teaching in secular settings because God

I have been married to my husband for 8 years. After arguing with God for many years, we have finally let Him win and will begin work in full time ministry in June 2002. I have always loved everything about childbirth.....from pregnancy to every moment of labor and birth. After the birth of our 5th child, we realized our family was complete. But I was left with a huge void....not that "God shaped one" that we're all born with (it's already been FILLED!)....but a void that needed to be filled with the miracle of birth! So I began the thought process on what it would take to become a midwife. Being impatient, I stumbled across info on a local labor doula training . This would take far less time so I pursued it. After my training and attending several births, I realized that THIS was what God had in mind for me. Witnessing birth is such a "GOD MOMENT" for me...I can truly feel His presence as He breathes that first breath of life into these tiny precious babies! And to be the "hands and feet of Christ" for these laboring women.....I haven't made it through a birth dry eyed yet!!! I am totally fulfilled by the work I have done as a doula. I have been working as a labor doula since October 2000 and received my certification from CAPPA in May 2001. In March of 2001, I also received my CAPPA certification in Childbirth Education. I teach private in-home classes on basic childbirth. I also teach a breastfeeding class.

I am the mother of 2 young boys. My first birth was long and very
frightening. I hadn't educated myself about what would be happening with my
body. I somehow felt alone despite the support of my husband and sister.
That labor was full of interventions...many of them at my request. (I just
didn't understand my options) With my second child, I was far better
educated, and understood what labor was, what to expect, and had a better
idea of how to handle it. Despite my preparations, I needed help... and lots
of it.. A good friend, who is also an OB nurse, lactation specialist, and
Lamaze instructor coached me through the most intense part of that labor.
What was a frightening experience the first time around was amazing and very
empowering the second time. It was after the birth of my second child that I
realized my calling as a doula. I wanted to help other woman have the same
type of empowering experience that I had! In June of 2001, I received my
labor doula certification from CAPPA, and I received my certification as a
Childbirth Educator in November of 2001.

My journey into the birth profession began about five years ago. God led me towards the birth world from a variety of directions - midwifery, home birth, labor support, etc. I initially planned to become a midwife, then after much research, prayer, and consideration, I decided that teaching women about their choices in childbirth was the way I could reach the most people. Helping women stay physically fit during pregnancy was a great opportunity to use my many years of dance training, and supporting these women as a doula was a natural outflow of educating them. I'm now certified through ICEA and DONA. Helping women experience better births is something I really enjoy. This is an exciting profession to be a part of!

I am a wife to Peter for 17 years and mom to Zachary, 14, Nicole 7, Caleb 6,
and Rachel 3. I homeschool my children at this time. I am teaching
childbirth education with Childbirth Associates of Augusta, which is an ICEA
group that works within the hospital there. I've recently attended a DONA
certified doula training and I'm working towards certification. I plan on
working on certification as a childbirth educator also. I love the miracle
of pregnancy and childbirth and I desire to teach women and serve them
during this exciting time of their lives. I would love to teach Christian
Childbirth Education to anyone who is interested in the education part of
childbirth, but with Christian principles being the focus. I have many
scriptures that I love concerning childbirth, but one that the Lord
ministered to me with from the time that I was first pregnant is Isaiah
40:11-He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
What a beautiful picture of our loving heavenly Father to pregnant and
laboring mothers! God has placed such a desire on my heart to co-labor
with Him in this way of serving.

A little about myself:
I live in Hallowell, Maine with my husband of 17 years and my 2 boys, ages 12 and 9. I have been teaching childbirth classes for Maine General for roughly 7 years, and have been certified as a doula for roughly 3. My business name is "Little Miracles" because I believe pregnancy and birth truly is a miraculous event. Teaching in a secular setting, I am able to minister to those who perhaps were not planning their pregnancy, and encourage them to see the beautiful things God can draw out of a difficult situation. I also don't hold back on sharing my faith, although I share it respectfully. My husband is a gifted Christian counselor (and secular as well) and is a great resource for me in dealing with clients with special needs. Besides teaching at the hospital, I also teach private lessons from my husband's counseling office, and offer labor support in Augusta, Brunswick, Waterville and Lewiston. I consider it a tremendous blessing to be able to witness the miracle of God's creation on a regualr basis!

I am the mother of six children, and we are expecting our seventh child in
March 2003. All of my children have been born naturally, and I have nursed
them for over a year. Many women in church were asking for my advice, so I
decided to get formal education from CAPPA and DONA so that I would be
better prepared to minister in the spirit of Titus 2. I deeply believe that
the Lord uses pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood to shape our lives and
bring us closer to Him. David said he was cast upon the Lord from his
mother's womb, so my prayer is that by ministering to families before and
after birth, the entire family will have a peaceful, gentle transition and
the Holy Spirit will touch all their hearts.

I firmly believe in and am awed by the natural ability of a woman's body to give birth, as designed by God. I am a strong proponent of natural, intervention-free birth in uncomplicated pregnancies, but support a woman in whatever she feels, after exploring her options, will help her to have the best possible birth experience.
